Regarding the recent cases of possible canine influenza, the University of Florida released the following statement yesterday:
Today, the Florida Dept. of Agriculture confirmed that there is currently another outbreak of Canine Influenza in Florida. The University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine is currently treating multiple patients for influenza caused by the H3N2 strain of the virus. The outbreak started at a dog show in Perry, GA and spread to Deland, FL (Volusia County).
We are urging all veterinary offices, boarding facilities, groomers, animal shelters, rescue groups or other places were dogs may participate in group activities or housed in large communal facilities to review their staff education to identify potential patients, treatment protocols and disinfection / isolation procedures.

There are several confirmed cases at UF, along with several more suspected cases elsewhere. The TBVC Board strongly encourages everybody to exercise due care with their dogs in order to avoid possible exposure and infection. If any show signs of sickness, call your vet immediately, especially if any of your dogs attended the Perry or Deland shows. Considering the contagiousness of this disease, do NOT bring them into the vet without calling first.
The safety of our club members and their dogs is of paramount importance. Considering the potential seriousness of this outbreak and the associated risks, holding a club event this coming weekend, June 3-4, is inadvisable. On that note, the Board has decided to postpone Fun Weekend until a later date to be determined.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we also believe that the safety of our dogs comes first, and until the extent and seriousness of this outbreak is better understood, we feel that this is the only safe course of action available.
Please stay tuned for further details on a rescheduled date! Fun Weekend is too great of an event NOT to have, so as soon as we have a chance, we will be working out the details for a new date and will send those out to you!
The status of the specialty scheduled for the Tampa shows June 16-18th is being discussed and any decisions on it will be shared as soon as they become available.
